Android最初由 安迪·魯賓 等人開發製作 [22]，最初開發這個系統的早期方向是建立一個 數位相機 的先進作業系統，但是後來發現相機市場規模不足實現其目標，轉而開發智慧型手機系統，於是 Android 成為一款面向智慧型手機的作業系統。

2009年4月，谷歌正式推出了 Android 1.5 這款手機，從Android 1.5版本開始，谷歌開始將Android的版本以甜品的名字命名，Android 1.5命名為Cupcake（紙杯蛋糕）。
